BET Awards Recognise Mzansi Talent

While South Africa has always been extremely proud of its talented musicians, it’s always good to get that international boost of recognition.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards announced across social media platforms on Thursday, 8 June, that they have nominated rapper K.O and amapiano stars Pabi Cooper and Uncle Waffles the Best International Act at this year’s ceremony.

“Grateful,” K.O. said via Twitter with a praying emoji after the nominations were announced. “PS: No voting option, please slide me your prayers and blessings,” he added.

“Oh that’s crazy,” Uncle Waffles tweeted shortly afterwards. Humorously, many tweeps from both Mzansi and Tanzania had a moment of doubt when they realised that their iconic artist was, in fact, born in Eswatini and only based in South Africa.

Along with the Mzansi performers, Nigerian afrobeat musicians Burna Boy and Ayra Starr have been recognised for their irresistible beats. Their American counterpart, Drake, is currently leading the nominees, with an impressive seven nominations, including “Album of the Year” and “Best Male Hip Hop Artist”.

The BET Awards ceremony will be aired live on Sunday, 25 June.
